What is Pind Daan? पिंडदान क्या है?

Pind Daan is a sacred ritual in Hinduism performed to offer homage to ancestors. It is believed that by performing this ritual, the souls of our departed loved ones attain peace and are released from the cycle of rebirth. The process involves offering symbolic rice balls (pinds) along with prayers and mantras that express gratitude and a request for spiritual liberation.

Gaya Ji is one of the most revered places in India for performing Pind Daan. According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama came to Gaya to perform this ritual for his father, King Dasharatha. Since then, lakhs of devotees come every year, especially during Pitru Paksha, to perform this sacred duty.

पिंडदान हिंदू धर्म की एक प्रमुख और आवश्यक विधि है, जिससे पितरों को तृप्ति मिलती है और उनकी आत्मा को मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है। गया जी वह स्थान है जहाँ भगवान श्रीराम ने स्वयं अपने पिता राजा दशरथ का पिंडदान किया था। यही कारण है कि यह स्थान इस कार्य के लिए अत्यंत श्रेष्ठ माना गया है।

राम, सीता और गया की कथा से आरंभ होती है यह परंपरा

त्रेतायुग की बात है। भगवान श्रीराम, माता सीता, और भाई लक्ष्मण, पिता राजा दशरथ के श्राद्ध कर्म हेतु गया आए थे। श्राद्ध और पिंडदान की तैयारी चल रही थी। श्रीराम आवश्यक सामग्री लेने चले गए, और इसी बीच

राजा दशरथ की आत्मा प्रकट हुई—माता सीता के समक्ष। राजा दशरथ की आत्मा ने कहा,

“मैं पिंड लेने आया हूँ, पुत्रवधू।”

माता सीता, आदर्श धर्मपत्नी और करुणा की साक्षात मूर्ति,जल, कुश, और चावल से बने पिंड देकर श्रद्धा और आँसुओं के साथ पिंडदान पूर्ण कर देती हैं। कुछ समय बाद श्रीराम लौटते हैं और विधि अनुसार पिंडदान प्रारंभ करना चाहते हैं परंतु राजा दशरथ की आत्मा पुनः प्रकट नहीं होती।

राम को आश्चर्य होता है। माता सीता सारा वृतांत सुनाती हैं। श्रीराम को विश्वास दिलाने के लिए पाँच साक्षियों को बुलाया गया:

फल्गु नदी,
तुलसी का पौधा,
गाय,
एक ब्राह्मण,
और अक्षयवट वृक्ष।

परंतु — चारों साक्षी झूठ बोलते हैं। सिर्फ़ अक्षयवट वृक्ष सत्य बोलता है।

माता सीता ने क्रोधित होकर शाप दिया:

फल्गु नदी: सतह के ऊपर नहीं बहेगी — इसलिए आज भी वह नदी भूमिगत बहती है।
तुलसी: पिंडदान में उपयोग नहीं की जाएगी।
गाय: पिंडदान में सहभागी नहीं होगी।
ब्राह्मण: यदि धर्म से भटके, तो फल न मिलेगा।

और अक्षयवट को आशीर्वाद दिया गया — आज भी गया में अक्षयवट की पूजा होती है, सत्य की प्रतिमा के रूप में।
